ABOUT LA DIGUE

La Digue is the third most populated island of the Seychelles, and fourth largest by land area, lying east of Praslin and west of Felicite Island and by far the most charming. It is the fourth-largest granitic island of Seychelles after Mahé, Praslin, and Silhouette Island. It has a population of only 2,800 people. Most of the inhabitants live in the west coast villages of La Passe and Anse Réunion. There is no airport on La Digue, so to get there from a foreign country, one must fly to Victoria and continue by ferry, usually via Praslin. It has an area of only 10km², making it very easy to travel by bike or on foot.

THE SEYCHELLES ISLANDS

Seychelles, is a pristine island republic in the western Indian Ocean, comprising 115 islands, with lush tropical vegetation, beautiful beaches, rated as some of the finest on the planet, and a wide variety of marine and other animal life. Situated between latitudes 4° and 11° S and longitudes 46° and 56° E, the major islands of Seychelles are located about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) east of Kenya and about 700 miles (1,100 km) northeast of Madagascar. The capital, Victoria, is situated on the island of Mahé.

One of the world’s smallest countries, the Seychelles is composed of two main island groups; the Mahé group of more than 40 central, mountainous granitic islands and a second group of more than 70 outer, flat, coralline islands. The islands of the Mahé group are rocky and typically have a narrow coastal strip and a central range of hills. The overall aspect of those islands, with their lush tropical vegetation, is that of high hanging gardens overlooking silver-white beaches and clear lagoons. The highest point in Seychelles, Morne Seychellois (2,969 feet [905 metres]), situated on Mahé, is located within this mountainous island group. The coralline islands, rising only a few feet above sea level, are flat with elevated coral reefs at different stages of formation. These islands are largely waterless, and very few have a resident population.

LIVING IN THE SEYCHELLES

The Seychelles are what everyone expects of tropical islands. Deep blue seas, palm fringed, white sandy beaches, and verdant, steaming jungles, climbing the slopes of rugged mountains, which seemingly emerge from the ocean. Smiling people, amazing food and old rum punch, the outside world could be a million miles away. It is in fact a 1000 miles away and this adds to the charm and appeal of this incredible island nation.

Seychelles suffers few of the problems that affect other developing countries. There is no poverty, very little, if any, pollution, over population is not a pressing problem, social services are adequate and the standard of living, of all its people, is high. Seychelles is an incredible place to live, work, and do business. The relaxed attitude and general approach of the local Seychellois permeates all facets of island life. The country is well managed by a stable government, with a discernible investment friendly disposition. There is a massive focus on the preservation and conservation of it’s pristine environment, utilisation of renewable energy sources, the enforcement of sustainable fishing practices and the protection of species and the sensitive ecosystems endemic to the Seychelles archipelago.

Truly an unspoilt Island Paradise.
